• NaNo Diaries 2017 – Day 3

Today words seemed to just flow much better, perhaps it was because I got some Reiki today and it shifted me about a little and I was actually able to just relax and really get into the story more. Or perhaps I also managed to have the whole house to myself, which meant I could reward myself with kitten cuddles, food trips and a chance to ground myself in the grass. But things just made more sense. It was really nice. I did actually allow myself a chance to take life as it came and it also happened that today I was tired as fuck, so I ended my night…

  • NaNo Diaries 2017 – Day 2

Today was tough as shit. I had so many issues with the story, nothing was gelling and I couldn’t get very far with what was going on in the story. I hit the dreaded week two on day two…go figure. I had the same thing happen to me last year and my hopes and dreams of hitting 50k in two days was definitely dashed by today. I did manage to pick myself up with consecutive word wars to do a neat amount of words. Lucy and Hunter did manage to finally have a scene together did involve a dream romp. It was so nice to have them on the same…

  • NaNo Diaries 2017 – Day 1

Today is the day, NaNoWriMo is here and I’m ready. I’ve decided that I’m going to document my writing days and what I do. I’ve never done this and I know that I may actually fall off doing this but it doesn’t matter. This is a look into what and how I manage to write so fast and so much in so little time. Most could say that I’m probably cheating but I don’t edit, I don’t even fix up spelling mistakes and that’s just how I manage to get so many of the words out on the page. I also touch type so I can just speed along, that…

  • NaNoWriMo: Introducing the Stories Part 3

I’m taking a break from packing and all of the things I should be doing because I need to take a breather, I had a huge feat of trying to get most of my uni work out of the way before NaNoWriMo’s beginning and I didn’t quite get everything I needed to do out of the way, at least not yet, but that’s ok, there’s still time. Today’s the last of the three part NaNoWriMo series where I’m introducing my projects, because it’s something I plan on getting into and I thought it would be a fun record for myself. In case you haven’t read Part 1 or 2 just…

  • NaNoWriMo: Introducing the Stories Part 2

In case you missed what I’m talking about, take a look back at this post for the details about NaNoWriMo and meeting my first two narrators. And now I’m going to introduce to you probably one of the narrators that I’ve had the most trouble with. I started his story (I’m an avid fan of first drafts. I have so many of them and I’m working on progressing them further) in 2012, it was my first NaNoWriMo away from home and the first one that really allowed me to bond with my now best friend, but he’s so bloody frustrating. I’m not even sure if the strongest of curse words…

  • The Nifoula

The Nifoula  As printed in The Last Word Anthology, you can find a copy of it here Long drives, open roads and old school Greek beats are prized possessions in the memories of my childhood. The purring of the V8 engine of Dad’s cherished ‘71 Holden Brougham, lovingly nicknamed The Nifi, because he adored the car like a wife, vibrating through my brain like a song I can’t seem to forget, nor do I want to. After the death of my dad, these memories are worshipped above all else. The tune of Mikri Mou Melissa, a song that always recalls images of tapping on the slim steering wheel, while singing loudly…

  • NaNoWriMo: Introducing the Stories Part 1

It’s NaNoWriMo pre-season and for those of you who don’t know what that is it stands for National Novel Writing Month, where the aim is to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. A huge feat in many ways. I’m about to embark on my 9th NaNoWriMo and I’m excited because I’m going to dive back into my stories I’ve already started because I’m so not ready to start new project (and just for the side fact, I totally can, I never not have any ideas, I just need to temper them) so I’m revisiting them. I’m going to introduce them to you though. Because sometimes part of the…

  • The Emerald Serpent by K.S Nikakis

I am an avid fantasy reader. Give me magic, faeries, mythical beings and I’m a pretty happy lady, what’s even better? Having people I know write amazing fantasy in different sub-genres, it makes me beyond happy and I was pretty lucky to get a little bit of the behind the scenes action with this book. It was written by the former head of my undergrad degree and the best thing about this? I managed to make a non-editor out of a serial editor of words. It only took like a week and a half of me hounding Karen before she turned around and said to me: Mandi guess what I…

  • The Subjectivity of Art

I’ve been really obsessed with music lately, which is not really out of the norm because we all know I need it to write and do just about anything else. I have a recurring hum in my ears because I’m hardly ever without earphones (I know, I know it’s actually really bad, but try and stop me…you might regret it) or there’s never not any music playing in the background. I also have four different devices, which can allow me to play music, five if you include my laptop. And I’ve been thinking about the subjectivity of art and the different mediums. Becuase just as much as I obsess over…

  • The Artist’s Way Wrap Up

Before I ventured on to actually do this journey, I’d heard lots about The Artist’s Way. Even friends who had dabbled with just the beginning pages had mentioned it but never really thought much about it. Now looking back I understand why it’s such a pivot and most recommended books around the internet. The Artist’s Way may have been published way back when (1992 to be exact), but every essay written within its cover still hits all the right spots some 25 years later. For those of you who haven’t picked up the book, seriously what are you doing? Even if you’re not blocked and you want to learn more…
