Sharing Sunday – Echoes
Today’s Sharing Sunday piece is by Gabriela and it’s a poem! Yay for mixed pieces other than short stories. It’s called Echoes and when she was thinking up the poem she had a picture in her mind of a huge dark, endless empty room, and trying to put those images into words. It was only after writing the first sentence did she realise how much of a metaphor that empty room was. After that the poem became a little more personal. So without anymore waffling from me here is Echoes.
Echoes
There’s silence, only silence.
Nothingness, and nothing more.
And yet, the nothingness is crushing,
And the lull, a deafening roar.
There’s blackness, utter darkness
And sheer emptiness beneath.
The walls around are caving in
And there’s hardly room to breathe.
There’s stillness, overwhelming
And much more than one can bear.
Yet a single, desperate voice cries out,
“Is anybody there?”
This one, sole sound breaks through the fog
This single, desperate plea-
Calls out, aching, and broken
For somebody, anybody.
But there’s not a soul here to be found-
They’re nothing but shadows.
And the only voices calling back
Are echoes
echoes
echoes.
